Frankie is a Lecturer in Sociology and Director of Undergraduate Admissions in the School of Social Policy.

Her research focuses largely on the role of new media technologies in producing gendered identities, particularly new femininities and new masculinities. Frankie has also collaborated with colleagues in the Birmingham Business School, researching alongside Professor Isabelle Szmigin on projects focusing on young people, social media, alcohol consumption and the night time economy.

Biography

Frankie joined the Department of Social Policy, Sociology and Criminology in 2017 having completed her PhD in the Department of Political Science and International Studies. During the academic year 2019/20, Frankie is convening the first year undergraduate module Sociology of Everyday Life and the second year undergraduate modules Modern Sociological Theory and Self and Society.

Postgraduate supervision

Frankie would be interested in supervising research students interested in the following areas:

  • Gender relations and identity construction
  • ‘New’ femininities and masculinities
  • Online identities and subcultures
  • Digital political activism  
  • Gender, neoliberalism and post-feminism

Doctoral research

PhD title
Social media, bedroom cultures and femininity: Exploring the intersection of culture, politics and identity in the digital media practices of girls and young women in England

Research

Research interests include:

  • New media and digital media practices
  • Gendered subjectivities and social change
  • The relationship between postfeminism and neoliberalism   
  • The sexual politics of the night time economy
  • Discourses of alcohol consumption

Frankie has worked as a researcher on a number of projects, including a project funded by the European Foundation for Alcohol Research which explored the role of social media in young people’s drinking cultures. This research was carried out alongside Professor Isabelle Szmigin (Birmingham Business School) and Professor Maria Piacentini (Lancaster University).
