Advanced Manipulative Physiotherapy MSc, 2023

Why did you choose to study your course at the University of Birmingham?

Studying at the University of Birmingham was always a dream due to its prestige and widespread acclaim. I was particularly drawn to the Advanced Manipulative Physiotherapy course offered by the university’s School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences, which included the clinical placement module, also reputed as one of the best of its kind.

What have been the highlights of the course?

While the course has been an all-round excellent experience for me, some highlights include the student friendly nature of all learning modules, the niche opportunity to develop practical skills through clinical placements and learning from some of the best minds in the field.

What have been the greatest challenges throughout your course so far?

The greatest challenge during the course has been navigating the intense coursework alongside routine errands whilst being away from family.

What was your research project about, and what has it involved?

My research project was a qualitative study which had implications in the domain of anatomy education in physiotherapy. The research explored the application of anatomy knowledge among physiotherapists using a think aloud method for a movement analysis task. It was found that there was a notable variation in the use of anatomy knowledge by the healthcare professionals with respect to the accuracy, specificity and depth of analysis. A more significant finding was the complete absence of remarks regarding the muscular attachments among the physiotherapists.

What key aspects of your experience at the University of Birmingham would you highlight to students thinking about coming to do the same course?

While it is important to focus on academics, do give importance to engaging in social activities and exploring the vibrant campus of the university. As the coursework can be demanding at times, striking the right balance between the two is often key to having an academically productive and fulfilling year.

What are your ambitions for the future? Do you have specific career plans?

I aim to have an established identity as a musculoskeletal physiotherapist with considerable expertise in post-surgical rehabilitation.  Alongside my career as a physiotherapist, I would like to stay in touch with the advancements in the field as well as stay an active member of the university’s alumni community.
