Laboratory Efficiency Training Program For Technicians

12 August 2026

Hosted at the University of Birmingham and led by technical staff from University of Nottingham and University of Birmingham. 

The training is aimed at technicians who are motivated to champion sustainable laboratory practices within their organisation and technical managers who can support local training delivery at a UK university or research institute. This course is currently aimed at those working within 'wet lab' spaces. Participants should have a basic understanding of sustainability and environmental issues.

Image Competition - Submission deadline 31st July 2026

We invite you to submit images to the Image Competition under the theme ‘Technicolour’ (focusing on colourful images related to their technical work).
This could be an image of new equipment, a new technique or advances in operations such as lab improvements or sustainability initiatives.
The image could be a photo, artistic depiction or hand drawn image. Under the Technicolour theme – an image bursting with colour, with you as the technician or your technical area at the heart of it.

The image can be any standard image format e.g. tiff, jpeg, png etc. but please try to limit image data size to less than 20MB.
The images will be judged by a panel and the winning images will receive a monetary prize (£100 for 1st place and two runners up prizes of £50). Winners will need to receive their prize at the Conference.
Please submit images with the subject “IST Conference 2026 Image Competition” by email as an attachment to: conference@istonline.org.uk
Please include a brief description (max 150 words) of what the image shows.
