Bruce joined the University of Birmingham, after more than 40 years practicing as an engineer, in order to contribute, via education and research to better outcomes for engineering projects.

Biography

Bruce has proven that he can make a positive difference to multidisciplinary engineering projects. He has a sound mathematical grounding and is an experienced systems and systems safety engineer with substantial domain knowledge in rail. He has written guidance on effective engineering processes, including Network Rail’s systems engineering handbook, and achieved the necessary consensus among stakeholders to put these processes into practice. Through his leading role in developing the Yellow Book – the UK railway’s handbook of engineering safety management (ESM) – he has made a significant, personal contribution to improving practice across a whole industry.

He is an accomplished communicator and has prepared and delivered a wide range of educational programmes and training courses. Bruce is capable of trailblazing, providing the personal leadership to put process improvement into action.

He joined the University of Birmingham in 2020 in order to contribute, via education and research, to better outcomes for such projects.

Research

Bruce is seeking to make a contribution to better outcomes on engineering projects by finding ways to help decision makers to take better decisions.
