Dr Aslı Kandemir is Research Fellow at the Wellcome Trust-funded project, “Access to Success Pathways for Inclusive Research Excellence (ASPIRE)” (2024-26). She is the author of Tolerance and Symbolic Borders (forthcoming Bristol University Press, 2026) and the Principal Investigator of the research project titled Values for Cohesion: In the Shadow of Karagöz and Hacivat. The project was funded by Birmingham City Council on behalf of the Ministry of Housing, Communities, and Local Government (Community Recovery Fund). 

In the ASPIRE project, she leads the research development process, aiming to develop an innovative pilot to enhance how we understand, create, and embed (race-)inclusive research practice and excellence. In the Values for Cohesion project, she leads all research activities, aiming to help strengthen resilience to mis/disinformation in Birmingham schools and the local community. 

She joined the University of Birmingham in 2022 as the qualitative lead of Leverhulme Trust-funded “‘Free’ expression at School?” (2022-25) project in the School of Education. She has published nineteen peer reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and expert opinions, as well as curriculum and learning materials. She is a certified Aurora Leader (Advance HE, 2024) and an academic mentor (EMCC, 2022). As an Associate Fellow of Higher Education Academy, she has been teaching in UK and Sweden HE since 2016 across curricula on Sociology, Education Studies, Criminology, Youth Studies, Social Work, and Sociology of Work and Organisation at the University of Birmingham (2022-present), Keele University (2019-2020), Luleå University of Technology (2019), and Liverpool Hope University (2016-19).

Biography

Dr Aslı Kandemir is a passionate interdisciplinary sociologist with strong, decade-long teaching and research experience in social and education policy, diversity, and inclusive curriculum and creative pedagogy. Her research brings a sociological perspective to inclusive values teaching by addressing diversity in communities, discourse-making in education policy, and enquiry-based, participatory, and creative pedagogies. She brings extensive experience in both academia and applied policy work, having previously managed EU-funded social projects, and contributed evidence to UK policymakers. Her work is grounded in advanced qualitative and arts-based methods, supported by quantitative research expertise. 

She is currently writing her first monograph titled Tolerance and Symbolic Borders: British-Turkish Identity, Values and Community Cohesion (Bristol University Press, 2026) and acting as the Co-Editor-in-Chief at Turkish Area Studies (TAS) Review, the flagship journal of the prestigious British Association of Turkish Area Studies. She is also an Editorial Board member of world-leading journal Race Ethnicity and Education and a peer-reviewer for pioneering international academic journals in the fields of Sociology, Education, and Research Methods. She also advises public sector, third sector, and community organisations within several outlets. She is a former radio DJ and an avid capoeirista.

Diversity (race/ethnicity, class, gender, and sexuality), social and education policy, social and political theory, research methods (arts-based and participatory, advanced qualitative, and quantitative/mixed methods).
