Nicki Newman is one of the School’s Deputy Deans responsible for resources and a Professor of Business Education. Previously, she undertook a range of education leadership roles including Director or Education, Director for Postgraduate Programmes and CoSS Lead for Postgraduate Programmes. During her time in education leadership Nicki led several strategic developments for the school including the development its new MSc portfolio. She was also the Director for Undergraduate Teaching Quality and Enhancement at the University of Sheffield Management School. As an Education Focused Professor, she is passionate about supporting others who are looking to develop their career in education. She has written chapters for the upcoming (early 2026) book ‘How to Become an Education-Focused Professor’ and has been invited to talk on the subject at a range of events.

She has taught a range of marketing subjects on undergraduate, postgraduate and professional programmes. She specialises in teaching introduction to marketing and marketing communications. She has studied how the use of technology can improve the student learning experience in Higher Education, which included working with Pearson on a range of projects piloting some of their digital products. She has delivered workshops and conference presentations on electronic marketing and feedback, using simulations in teaching and the use of flipped teaching. She is currently working on projects related to embedding employability skills in the curriculum which includes the use of authentic assessment and how Business Schools should incorporate AI software into their programmes and modules. She has recently published articles in the European Journal of Marketing and Journal of Marketing Management on the subject.

Biography

Nicki Newman is a Professor of Business Education and one of the School’s Deputy Dean responsible for resources.

Before joining Birmingham Business School in 2018, Nicki worked at Sheffield University Management School (2003 – 2018) initially as a part time tutor whilst completing her PhD and later as a University and Senior University Teacher in Marketing. She has held the roles of Undergraduate Director for Teaching Quality and Enhancement and the Divisional Director for Teaching Quality (Marketing, International Business, Entrepreneurship and Strategy Division).

In addition to the University of Sheffield, Nicki has taught at Hallam University, Sheffield University International College and Oxford School of Marketing. She has taught a range of marketing subjects including introduction to marketing, integrated marketing communications, marketing channels and international marketing on undergraduate, postgraduate and professional programmes.

Nicki has researched in the area of food marketing to children for her PhD and then her research moved to focused on how technology can be used to improve the student learning experience. She has worked on projects with Pearson piloting their MyMarketing Experience simulation game and REVEL (an interactive e-book). She has delivered workshops and conference presentations on electronic marketing and feedback, using simulations in teaching and the use of flipped teaching.
