Dr Idlan Zakaria is an Associate Professor in Accounting. Her teaching focuses on financial accounting and reporting, and business analytics. She researches responsible business in the football sector and is part of the university’s Centre for Responsible Business Responsible Sport research cluster.

Biography

Idlan joined the University of Birmingham in 2016 from the University of Essex. Her research interest began in the areas of performance measurement, corporate governance, and  financial reporting disclosure within the corporate sector. This has since evolved into studying these practices within the realm of responsible business behaviour within the sports industry.

As part of her continued scholarly interest in education, she also is interested in the higher education industry and the emerging use and implications of generative AI in higher education teaching, learning and assessment, and employability skills.

In 2019-2020, Idlan spent 18 months leading The Centre, an independent centrist think tank in Malaysia where she was the founding CEO. The think tank focuses on policy research with a particular interest in social safety nets, public goods and societal contracts.

At the departmental and school level, she has held posts of Programme Director for the BSc Accounting and Finance (Singapore) & MSc Accounting and Finance, as well as the School Employability Lead.

Idran is interested in supervising PhD students who would like to study responsible business within the sports or football industry.
