I am a Clinical Lecturer based between the University of Birmingham and Birmingham Children's Hospital, leading a translational immunotherapy research programme focused on paediatric brain tumours.

My research investigates the interplay between radiotherapy, therapy-induced senescence, and the tumour immune microenvironment to understand how these processes shape anti-tumour immune responses. Building on these mechanistic insights, I develop next-generation immunotherapies, with a particular focus on CAR-NK cell therapies and rational combination strategies that exploit radiation-induced vulnerabilities while overcoming immune suppression within the tumour microenvironment. I established the NK Cell-Based Approaches for Childhood Cancer Therapy group, which provides a programme for the development and translation of NK cell therapies for children with cancer.

Biography

Ashley Vardon is a paediatric oncology registrar and academic clinical lecturer whose career bridges working with children and young people with cancer and translational cancer research. Since qualifying as a doctor, he has worked within the NHS and is currently based at the University of Birmingham and West Midlands Deanery, combining clinical paediatrics with laboratory-based research. His specialist focus is paediatric oncology, with a particular emphasis on diffuse midline glioma (DMG) and paediatric high-grade glioma.

Ashley completed a PhD in Cancer Biology at University College London, funded by Cancer Research UK Clinical Research Training Fellowship. His doctoral research, titled “Cellular Senescence in Paediatric Diffuse High-Grade Glioma: From Mechanism to Therapeutic Opportunities,” examined how senescence-associated pathways influence tumour progression and therapeutic resistance. This work generated novel biological insights and therapeutic targets, contributing to international presentations and peer-reviewed outputs. Building on this foundation, his current research programme focuses on targeting tumour cells and the immune microenvironment using engineered cellular immunotherapies, including CAR-T and CAR-NK approaches. His long-term aim is to develop scalable, off the shelf cellular therapies capable of improving outcomes for children with aggressive brain tumours.

Early clinical experiences shaped his academic trajectory. During a medical elective at Johns Hopkins Hospital in the Paediatric Oncology Department, he gained exposure to advanced translational research and multidisciplinary care models. Subsequent training posts in haematology/oncology at Birmingham Children’s Hospital and a Clinical Fellowship in Drug Development and Oncology at Great Ormond Street Hospital further developed his understanding in early-phase trials and innovative therapies for childhood cancers.

Alongside his research and clinical roles, Ashley has held significant national leadership responsibilities. Since 2021, he has served as the National RCPCH Academic Trainee Representative, representing more than 300 academic trainees across the UK. In this capacity, he secured policy changes to improve funding access, established a UK-wide network for paediatric academic trainees, generated national data examining women’s access to academic paediatrics, and contributed to reforms in academic training pathways. His leadership reflects a sustained commitment to mentorship, workforce development, and structural improvement within academic medicine.

Clinically, he continues to work as a paediatric registrar and oncologist within the NHS, contributing to complex oncology care, clinical trial delivery. Exposure to both tertiary oncology has reinforced his focus on developing treatments that are not only biologically innovative but also scalable and implementable for impactful patient benefit.
