As a Research Impact Development Partner (Medical Technologies), Nik supports the development and embedding of systems, processes and culture that contribute to excellence in research impact, with a strong focus on Medical Technologies, while developing relationships with partners and other stakeholders in line with the College’s strategic research themes.

Prior to his current role, Nik worked in business engagement at the University of Birmingham (infrastructure and urban wellbeing projects for the Department of Civil Engineering and the National Buried Infrastructure Facility (NBIF), at the Energy and Bioproducts Research Institute (EBRI)-Aston University, as well as a Research Fellow in the bioenergy sector.

Nikolaos Venetsaneas is part of the Healthcare Technologies Institute (HTI), an interdisciplinary network of over 70 academics working together to advance new technologies and treatments that encourage better tissue healing and rehabilitation tools.  The HTI brings together leading experts from a variety of disciplines across the University of Birmingham, including chemical engineering, biomedical science, computer science, applied mathematics, chemistry and physics. Researchers across campus are working collaboratively to speed up the translation of new discoveries into health applications.

Biography

Nik is a Research Impact Development Partner (Medical Technologies) at the University of Birmingham. His background expertise is in Chemical Engineering (Dipl, PhD) and Ecology (MSc).

In 2014, Nik joined the School of Civil Engineering and the Environment (University of Southampton) as a Research Fellow in an EPSRC-SUPERGEN Bioenergy Hub project examining the synergy between pyrolysis fractions and anaerobic digestion.

In 2017, Nik worked at the Energy & Bioproducts Research Institute (EBRI-Aston University) as a Business Research Associate in an ERDF project that provided services (consultancy, advice on policy for waste/biofuels/sustainability, technical issues, knowledge transfer and networking) to West Midlands SMEs in the bioenergy sector, while delivering a ‘Masterclass’ session, engaged with more than 30 businesses, authored 6 reports (technical and market analysis reports) and co-authored 11 reports.

Since 2019, Nik supported business engagement activities, networking, relationships, and research collaborations for the University of Birmingham’s National Buried Infrastructure Facility (NBIF) & Civil Engineering academics, as well as, for UKRRIN’s DIGI-RAIL SME support project (2022-2023).

Nik’s current post at the University of Birmingham is to assist researchers/academics across Colleges by providing advice and guidance in all elements of research impact within the Medical Technologies space, while developing relationships with partners and stakeholders in line with the College’s strategy.

Additionally, Nik supports research impact development for the West Midlands ‘6D’ Innovation Accelerator (6D-IA): The West Midlands ‘6D’ Innovation Accelerator (6D-IA), coordinated by the University of Birmingham, will unite key stakeholders (universities, hospitals, industry and government-funded ‘Catapults’ for manufacturing innovation) to supercharge the region’s ability to accelerate new health and medical technologies, delivering a streamlined programme to help companies navigate “pinch-points” in the process of medical translation.
