Professor Balvinder (Sunny) Khambay

Professor Balvinder Khambay is Academic University lead of the Orthodontic Department and Honorary Consultant Orthodontist at Birmingham Dental School. He is also Honorary Professor of Orthodontics at the Hong Kong University and the University of Leeds.

He was previously Lecturer and then Senior Clinical University Lecturer / Honorary Consultant in Orthodontics, Academic Lead and Overseas Program Director of the Orthodontic Department at Glasgow Dental School (1998 to 2012). From 2012 until 2015 he was Associate Clinical Professor / Programme Director of Orthodontics at the Faculty of Dentistry, The University of Hong Kong before returning to the UK in 2015; when he was appointed Clinical Chair Professor in Orthodontics at the University of Leeds.

Balvinder has extensive experience in both teaching and research and has worked in collaboration with various institutions both nationally and internationally. He is also an international lecturer and examiner and has been a reviewer for European grants.

He has a longstanding interest in the correction of facial deformity working closely with Oral and Maxillo-facial surgeons. He has also worked with Plastic surgeons, Neurologists, morphometric statisticians and computer scientists. In particular, his interests lie in the three-dimensional planning for orthognathic patients and cleft patient outcomes. In collaboration with colleagues he organises the Glasgow biannial course on the recent advances of the diagnosis and management of dento-facial deformities. He is now also one of the leading clinicians researching the use of 3D motion capture (4D) stereophotogrammetry for the assessment of facial animation.

He has supervised over 30 MSc's and 3 PhD's in the area of 3D imaging. He has published over 50 articles in peer reviewed national and international journals and lectured internationally on 3D and 4D imaging. His research students have won multiple national and international prizes. The first edition of his textbook relating to the team management of orthognathic patients was released in December 2013.

He is currently a Member of the Faculty of Examiners Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh for the MOrth Examination and previous Examiner for the Conjoint MOrth RCS (Ed) and FCDSHK (Intermediate) Examination in Orthodontics and Exit Examination in the Speciality of Orthodontics for the College of Dental Surgeons of Hong Kong. He has recently been appointed an Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examiner.
