Ajit is a Clinical Associate Professor and Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry. at the School of Dentistry in the University of Birmingham. She is module lead for Paediatric Dentistry Undergraduate curriculum. On appointment in 2017, the module was flagged at being at risk by external body (GDC). In a short period of time Ajit, was able to constrictive align the module and embed innovative teaching methods. The module receives “outstanding” feedback and her success is demonstrated by the number of Undergraduate students who are awarded national prizes.

Her research expertise are developing as she focuses on child oral health and prevention interventions.

Biography

Ajit qualified in Dentistry from the University of Birmingham in 2007. She was awarded several undergraduate prizes. After completing vocational training and various senior house officer positions, she commenced her specialist training in Paediatric Dentistry at the Eastman Dental Hospital.

Ajit is currently Head of Teaching in Paediatric Dentistry and Safeguarding lead for course. Ajit is responsible for the OSCEs (Objective Structured Clinical Exam) in Paediatric Dentistry for 4th year BDS students. In addition, Ajit supervises BDS students undertaking treatments on clinic and delivers teaching to BDS, Hygiene and Therapy as well as Nursing students. This teaching takes the form of lectures, tutorials, and small-group teaching.

Ajit has also supported undergraduates and postgraduate students in career development. Inspiring many junior dentists to pursue the speciality as a career choice. Actively involved in widening participation and oral health interventions in local schools and with other allied health staff i.e. Health Visitors.

Ajit completed her consultant training in 2021 and was awarded “outstanding trainee” on completion of her training. She is able to provide all aspects of paediatric care and has a specialist interest in the oral rehabilitation of children with hypodontia. This has resulted in her being invited to talk international on the care of this cohort of patients.

Teaching

Research

As part of her sedation postgraduate course, Ajit conducted a pilot study looking at the effects of Midazolam on paediatric patients. This was presented at the annual DSTG conference. 

She is currently working on a Cochrane review looking at techniques for increasing acceptance of local anaesthetic in children having dental treatment.
