Biography

Kelvin qualified as a children’s nurse in 2011 and first started working as a paediatric intensive care nurse at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital (BWCH). He progressed to a Band 5 Team Leader in the 6 years he worked there, completing the in house foundation and specialist course as well as the continuous veno-venous haemofiltration (CVVH) course. Whilst working on PICU, Kelvin worked closely with the PICU education team providing clinical supervision for newly qualified nurses starting on PICU.

Kelvin then worked on the neurosurgical ward for a further year, gaining experience with looking after children with acute and chronic neurological disorders such as acquired brain injuries, epilepsy, brain tumours etc.

He started working within higher education in 2018 at Birmingham City University, where he started as an Assistant Lecturer. Kelvin was involved in innovative teaching and learning that promoted growth mindset, emotional intelligence, digital learning and bioscience teaching and learning. His contributions led to winning Birmingham City University’s Extra Mile Award for Inspirational Teacher of the Year in 2019.

Kelvin worked closely with BWCH to develop the Theory into Practice programme, designed to help nursing students bridge theoretical knowledge into application of clinical practice. He developed a programme called Scenario Based Physiology to promote physiological underpinning into clinical practice. This led to winning the Partnership of the Year with BWCH in the Student Nursing Times Awards in 2019.

In 2020, in response to the pandemic, Kelvin created the Chill Out Hub which was designed to provide easily accessible mental wellbeing support, as well as a platform to promote peer support and emotional awareness.

In 2021 he was nominated for Educator of the Year in the Student Nursing Times Awards.
