David is a Lecturer in Nursing (Mental Health Field) at the University. David has extensive experience and a rich history, working clinically in mental health and is a passionate clinical teacher. He has taught in various nursing fields and to multiple disciplines at several NHS Trusts and Universities.

Biography

David has over 34 years practical experience in mental health nursing in the following areas: acute, rehabilitation, challenging behaviours, dementia and frailties, forensic (secure) including psychiatric intensive care, liaison and diversion.

Recently in his career David worked for Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Foundation NHS Trust (BSMHFT). He is passionate about practice development and teaching, having chaired the subject matter expert (SME) forum and developed a peer review process in BSMHFT. David is also a respected SME in clinical risk assessment and management, and suicide prevention.

David has recent practical experience in managing a Trust wide resuscitation department and as a Trauma Risk Management (TRiM) practitioner.

Teaching

  • Clinical risk assessment and management (CRAM) incorporating suicide prevention on the psychological wellbeing practitioners’ course - University of Birmingham, undergraduate nursing course at Birmingham City University, clinicians at BSMHFT and Forward-Thinking Birmingham NHS Trusts.
  • Nursing skills and simulation at Birmingham City University
  • Recognition and referral of mental illness on the advanced practitioners’ course at Warwick University Medical School including enhanced life support skills in his previous post.
  • Home office accredited WRAP (Raising awareness of PREVENT trainer)

Other activities

David is a member of the Coventry Community First Responders.

He enjoys photography, stand up paddle boarding and hopes to take up paragliding in the near future.
