Dr. Anelia Kurteva is an Assistant Professor in Computer Science (Data Management in AI) at the University of Birmingham, The UK. Previously, she was a senior postdoc at Department of Informatics, King’s College London and a postdoc at TU Delft, The Netherlands.
She completed her PhD at the Semantic Technology Institute (STI) Innsbruck, Department of Computer Science, University of Innsbruck, Austria. In 2022, Anelia joined the European Data Protection Board’s pool of experts in new technologies, privacy and data protection and in 2024 was awarded a postdoc fellowship in Safety and Security in AI by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
Anelia has been involved in several international and national projects on developing solutions for data interoperability and automated compliance verification of data sharing in the smart cities (e.g. smashHit Horizon 2020, CampaNeo FFG) and sustainability (e.g. RePlanIT NWO) domains. Her work on automating legal compliance with knowledge graphs has been noted as valuable contribution to the field of Accountable AI by the OECD Policy Division and the German Government.
Anelia is an active reviewer for leading conferences and journals in (but not only) the Semantic Web (e.g. Semantic Web journal, Journal of Web Semantics, European Semantic Web Conference, SEMANTiCs) field and co-chaired the posters and demos track at SEMANTiCs 2024 conference in Amsterdam. Since 2025 she occasionally serves as an external peer reviewer for the UK government.
