Over the last 10 years Dr Guest has been the lead simulation developer for the Human Interface Technologies (HIT) Team working in the areas of 3D modelling, virtual reality, electronic engineering, software development and Serious Games.  His work has involved developing a wide range of training and educational systems including augmented defence planning tools, submersible vehicle piloting, bomb disposal systems, submarine safety, unmanned air vehicle control, medical procedures and robotic arm manipulation. He has also taught on the subjects of 3D modelling and computer graphics at the University of Birmingham and the University of Plymouth as a Royal Academy of Engineering lecturer.

Biography

Dr Guest has been the lead simulation developer for the Human Interface Technologies (HIT) Team for over ten years. Specialising in interactive 3D environments his work has spanned a wide array of training and educational applications. He has been recognised both nationally and internationally, winning innovation awards from BAE Systems and the West Midlands Academic Health Science Network’s Celebration of Innovation.

His current work focuses on developing a multi user cross platform augmented realty training system (AUGGMED) funded through the HORIZON 2020 Framework Programme for Research and Innovation. The aim of AUGGMED is to develop a serious game platform to enable single- and team-based training of end-users with different level of expertise from different organisations responding to terrorist and organised crime threats.

The platform will automatically generate non-linear scenarios tailored to suit the needs of individual trainees with learning outcomes that will improve the acquisition of emotional management, analytical thinking, problem solving and decision making skills. The game scenarios will include advanced simulations of operational environments, agents, telecommunications and threats, and will be delivered through virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) environments with multimodal interfaces.

He is also the lead developer for the HIT Team’s Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT) trainer, under a contract from the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine. The MERT trainer blends real, virtual and augmented reality to allow future defence medics the opportunity to see, hear and feel the reality of emergency medical evacuations

Research

Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL)

Robotic control systems and 3D simulation involving integrating real world motion controlled movements of a nine degree of freedom robot arm with a live virtual simulation.

Royal Navy

On the evening of 20 March 2007 a Self-Contained Oxygen Generator (SCOG) exploded killing two Royal Navy sailors, injuring a third and causing extensive damage to the Forward Escape Compartment (FEC). I was tasked with creating a 15 minute pre-rendered 3D animation of the event shortly before and 50 minutes after the explosion. The animation was shown at the coroners court of enquiry to assist in conveying the events to all parties.

The National Marine Aquarium (NMA)

Producing interactive 3D exhibits to support The National Marine Aquarium and the creation of the “Virtual Scylla” synthetic environment for environmental research and robotic submersible simulation.

Ministry of Defence Munitions and Search School (Kineton)

The development of 3D simulations to train awareness and threat assessment of improvised explosive devices (IED) and procedural task trainers for explosive ordnance disposal (EOD).

Royal Centre for Defence Medicine (RCDM)

Investigation into numerous uses for serious games and mobile technology in healthcare including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy (VRET) and phantom limb pain.

UK Armed Forces’ Medical Emergency Response Team

The development of an augmented reality simulator to train for battlefield incidents that require emergency medicine.

Other activities

Scisys and the Maritime Collaborative Enterprise

Operations room concept design in support of the Maritime Air Defence Command for future naval ships. This involved the development of a unity based design tool that would allow users to configure station arrangements to asses team communication in future combat vessels.
