Dr Plamen Andreev works on the skeletal systems of early vertebrates, combining high-fidelity synchrotron tomography and traditional histological methods to understand the interplay between patterning, tissue structure and cell types and how those factors affect bone morphology.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Palaeobiology, University of Birmingham, 2014
  • MSc in Palaeontology and Biostratigraphy, Sofia University, Bulgaria, and University of Copenhagen, 2009
  • BSc in Geography and Biology, Sofia University, 2006

Biography

Dr Andreev's research has introduced novel ways to analyse and interpret developmental data preserved in the mineralised tissues of fossil species and combined classical sectioning techniques with state-of-the-art computed tomography. In the process he has made internationally recognised contributions to the study the skeletal systems of early jawed vertebrates including that include new protocols for the 3D visualisation of bone and dentine tissues. Dr Andreev's work at Qujing Normal University (QJNU) in partnership with the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology (IVPP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) has allowed him to investigate exceptional vertebrate fossil material from China and publish some of this work as two first-author papers in the journal Nature. This partnership and the wealth of exceptional fossil material, ensure regular output of high-impact publications and deepening of my collaborations with other leading vertebrate palaeontology research groups in Europe (Naturalis Biodiversity Center) and the UK (University of Birmingham).
