Biography

Dr Louise Crowley studied Medicine at the University of Birmingham, during which she undertook an intercalated BMedSc Clinical Sciences Degree. This involved a laboratory project investigating the role of a transmembrane glycoprotein in the pathogenesis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

Following completion of her undergraduate medical degree, Louise moved to Stoke-on-Trent where she completed the Academic Foundation Programme and gained experience with big data research at Keele University.

Louise was subsequently awarded an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship at University College London, and subsequently at the University of Birmingham.

In 2025, Louise was awarded a PhD at the University of Birmingham, thesis entitled ‘Neutrophil dynamics in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis’, and was appointed an Academic Clinical Lecturer in Respiratory Medicine within the Department of Inflammation and Ageing.

Louise is a respiratory and general internal medicine registrar in the West Midlands. Louise is competent in a range of laboratory research skills, and has extensive experience in the delivery of observational studies (that include translational and clinical research components, such as flexible bronchoscopy and oximetry studies). Louise has been a sub-investigator on numerous Phase I to III clinical trials in interstitial lung diseases and the wider respiratory field. Louise is passionate about improving supportive and palliative care service delivery for patients with interstitial lung diseases.

Teaching

  • MBChB (UG)
  • Biomedical Science (UG)
  • Doctors in training – ward-based teaching
  • Louise has supervised an Intercalated MSci in Clinical Science student

Postgraduate supervision

Louise has supervised an Intercalated MSci in Clinical Science student who undertook a laboratory-based research project

Louise is interested in supervising doctoral research students and medical students undertaking intercalation degrees who are interested in research related to:

  • Examining the role of neutrophils in the pathogenesis of pulmonary fibrosis.

Research

Research interests

Louise’s research is focused on interstitial lung diseases. Within this space, Louise has a particular interest in:

1) Investigating the role of neutrophils in fibrotic lung diseases – do neutrophils contribute to disease pathogenesis and progression? Is this a novel avenue for therapeutic manipulation?

2) The burden of hypoxaemia/hypoxia in interstitial lung diseases.
