Biography

Dr. Gupta's career bridges healthcare systems across continents, shaped by her unique training path from specialist certification in Asia to retraining in the UK. Enhanced by international fellowships in the USA (UPenn), UK (University of Oxford & Bath), Sweden (Karolisnka Institute), and Australia (Melbourne University), this global perspective drives her scientific enquiry to understanding and eliminating ethnic and regional disparities in healthcare outcomes. It is the foundation of her work, which seeks to create a world where a patient’s background does not determine their health outcome.

Trained in clinical and translational sciences, Dr. Gupta established the MyoCite biorepository of 350+ myositis patients with longitudinal data and autoantibody profiling. Her characterization of inflammatory myopathies in diverse populations revealed unique antibody profiles and clinical manifestations, particularly a 50% prevalence of anti-MDA5 antibodies with distinctive presentations in darker skin tones. This work identified novel biomarkers of muscle strength and accelerated senescence while documenting higher early mortality from atypical infections.

Her current research integrates large language models into rheumatology practice, developing automated disease scoring for muscle and skin conditions, digital triage systems for osteoporosis, and AI-assisted diagnosis of complex conditions. These applications demonstrate performance comparable to human evaluators while expanding access to specialized care.

With recognized expertise in as a researcher (280 publications, 6000+ citations, H-index 34), she holds key positions in various international organizations, including Chair of the IMACS Telemedicine Special Interest Group, Chair of APLAR Young Rheumatology Partnerships Committee, and Co-Convenor of the EULAR task force on Big Data and AI.

Featured in Lancet Rheumatology as an inspiring early career researcher, she is recognized for her contributions to myositis research.

Research

Characterisation of Myositis in Diverse Populations

Dr Gupta has published  on Indian demographic characteristics, complications, and outcomes research in myositis. Through the MyoCite cohort and linked bio-repository, her work has explored autoantibodies, biomarkers of accelerated immunosenescence and non-immune pathways including metabolomics.

Recently the MARC (Myositis Audit and Research Collaborative) network has examined current clinical practices and identified opportunities for improving outcomes and guideline adherence through enhanced clinical workflows. In 2025 extended MyoCite consortia collaborations published on flares and natural history outcomes in inflammatory myopathies.

The COVAD Study

Dr Gupta established the international COVAD study, conducting three phases that generated datasets totalling 55,000 patient responses. Initially exploring pandemic impact and outcomes with COVID-19 infection, the programme evolved to collate patient voices in autoimmune diseases, examining self-efficacy, wellbeing, dietary interventions, and complementary health modalities. Her analysis has informed her contributions to the EULAR vaccination guidelines and work towards telemedicine recommendations for muscle diseases.

Education and Equity Innovation

With the CHANGE consortium, research on gender equity has contributed to professional discourse and policy development. Her work includes social media declarations for priorities in rheumatology, mapping the global rheumatology social media landscape, and developing workflows for social media editors.

Dr Gupta's experience spanning various regions has informed collaborations and work towards a vision of collaborative partnership models for young rheumatology mentoring. She has examined the soft skills training needs for young rheumatology trainees. Her interests include partnerships between international young rheumatologist leagues, creating frameworks that support growth among motivated young specialists through integrated digital and traditional mentorship approaches.
