Dr Jaimin Patel is an NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine at the University of Birmingham, and in the final stages of his specialist training within the West Midlands Deanery.

Dr Jaimin Patel is part of Perioperative, Anaesthesia, Critical Care and Trauma Trials (PACCT) group. Jaimin has translational research interests in the field of anaesthesia and critical care. Current research projects include the outcomes of patients following emergency surgery, immune responses to sepsis/inflammation and acute lung injury. Jaimin is passionate about increasing access to research for anaesthetic trainees and is a co-founder of West Midlands Trainee Research in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Network (WMTRAIN) and also Vice-Chair of the national trainee collaborative, Research and Audit Federation of Trainees (RAFT).

Qualifications

  • PhD in Experimental Medicine 2015
  • FRCA in 2008
  • MBChB, University of Birmingham in 2005
  • BMEDSc (Hons) in Public Health, University of Birmingham 2004

Biography

Dr Jaimin Patel completed his medical training at the University of Birmingham (2005). After initial training and successful completion of his post-graduate exams in his chosen speciality of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine, Jaimin entered into clinical research.

Jaimin’s PhD investigated the effects of sepsis and ageing on neutrophil function and the role statins have in modulating neutrophil responses. The thesis was conferred in 2015 and the results have been presented nationally at the National Institute of Academic Anaesthesia’s Annual Scientific Meeting.

He was awarded NIHR Clinical Lecturership in Anaesthesia and ICM in 2016 at the University of Birmingham as part of the Perioperative, Anaesthesia, Critical Care and Trauma Trials (PACCT) group. He is currently in the final 6-months of his specialist training and is working clinically at the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust.

Jaimin has translational research interests in peri-operative and intensive care medicine, with a focus on improving the outcomes for patients. His main research focuses on the use of novel therapies to modulate the innate response to inflammation/sepsis.

Jaimin is passionate about increasing access to research for trainees in Anaesthesia. As such, he was a co-founder of the West-Midlands Trainee Research in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care network (WMTRAIN) and has recently been appointed to vice-chair of the national trainee research collaborative, Research and Audit Federation of Trainees (RAFT).
