Amy Tansell is an applied mathematician working at the interface of mathematics and behavioural science. Her research develops mathematical models of collective human behaviour, combining behavioural theory and stochastic modelling to understand how people respond to risk, uncertainty, and threat in high‑risk environments.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Interdisciplinary Applied Mathematics, University of Birmingham, 2026
  • MSci in Mathematics, University of Birmingham, 2020

Biography

Amy completed her PhD within the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Topological Design, undertaking interdisciplinary research at the interface of Applied Mathematics and Mechanical Engineering. Her doctoral work focused on mathematical modelling of the extrusion‑based bioprinting process, where she derived asymptotic slender‑body models to predict print resolution.

Following the completion of her PhD, Amy was awarded the EPSRC Additional Skills Funding: Postdoctoral Pathways Award, supervised by Professor Rosemary Dyson and Dr Galane Luo (Mathematics), and delivered in collaboration with the Manufacturing Technology Centre. Through this award, she translated her doctoral research into practical tools for engineers by developing a user‑friendly graphical user interface and accessible Python library capable of performing predictive simulations prior to printing.

Amy is currently a Centre‑UB Early Career Research Fellow, working with Dr Galane Luo (Mathematics) as academic mentor and undertaking an industry partnership with Bays' Consulting Ltd. Her fellowship investigates crowd behaviour under threat through the integration of behavioural science and applied mathematics, with the aim of supporting more transparent and interpretable approaches to public‑safety modelling.

Her research career has spanned applications in additive manufacturing, online crime, and behavioural modelling, united by a common interest in using mathematics to understand complex real‑world systems and support evidence‑informed decision‑making.
