Biography

Dr Amir Hajiyavand is an Associate Professor in the School of Engineering, University of Birmingham, United Kingdom. He holds both a Masters of Engineering (MEng) degree in Mechanical Engineering (Biomedical) and a PhD in Robotics from University of Birmingham. His research is centred on the design and development of advanced robotic and automated systems, with a particular focus on integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) to address challenges in various such as healthcare, manufacturing and the Circular Economy. His expertise spans industrial automation, robotic inspection, robotic manipulation, and high-precision micromanipulation, enabling the development of intelligent robotic platforms for complex industrial and medical applications.

Dr Hajiyavand has extensive experience in translating innovative technologies from early-stage research to real-world deployment, successfully advancing solutions across the full spectrum of Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs). He has established strong collaborations with industrial partners and leading academic institutions worldwide, delivering interdisciplinary research that bridges fundamental robotics, AI, and engineering applications. His work is dedicated to enhancing the efficiency, precision, adaptability, and autonomy of next-generation robotic systems, contributing to advances in manufacturing, healthcare, and sustainable technologies.

Dr Amir Hajiyavand's research focuses on advancing intelligent robotics, automation, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to develop innovative solutions for real-world challenges across manufacturing, healthcare, and the Circular Economy. His work combines robotics, computer vision, sensing technologies, and AI to design autonomous systems capable of operating safely, efficiently, and reliably in complex and dynamic environments. A key objective of his research is to bridge the gap between fundamental scientific advances and industrial deployment by translating emerging technologies into practical, high-impact solutions.

His research spans several interconnected themes, including robotic manipulation, industrial automation, robotic inspection, precision robotics, and AI-enabled autonomous systems. He develops intelligent robotic platforms for applications such as automated inspection and quality assurance, advanced manufacturing, high-precision micromanipulation, medical and healthcare technologies, and sustainable manufacturing. His work also explores human–robot collaboration and intelligent decision-making, enabling robotic systems to adapt to changing environments and perform increasingly complex tasks with greater autonomy.

A significant aspect of Dr Hajiyavand's research is promoting the successful adoption of robotics within industry.
