Dr Andrew Surtees is an expert in social cognition, autism and mental health.  He combines cutting-edge research on social understanding in typical and atypical populations with practice as a Clinical Psychologist.

Biography

Dr Andrew Surtees completed his PhD at the University of Birmingham on the cognitive processes implicated in social and spatial perspective-taking.  He was awarded a Research Fellowship by Marie Curie Actions for the European Commission and Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique, which he undertook at Université catholique de Louvain.  During this time, he extended his work on the cognitive and neural processes involved in perspective-taking, employing EEG and fMRI.  Further to this, he completed training as a Clinical Psychologist.  He combines being a lecturer at Birmingham, with working as a Clinical Psychologist for Birmingham Children’s Hospital; in this role, he specializes in assessing autism in children and young adults with comorbid mental health problems.

Teaching

Dr. Surtees mainly teaches on the department’s Clinical Psychology programmes, specialising in Developmental Disorders and Children and Young People’s Mental Health.

Dr Surtees is registered as a Practitioner Psychologist with the Health and Care Professional Council.  He is a member of the Experimental Psychology Society and the International Pediatric Sleep Association.
