Daniel is a mixed-methods researcher, using socio-ecological approaches to investigate the determinants of health inequalities and follow-up studies aimed at designing interventions and/or policy that inform preventive strategies. He also has knowledge and expertise in the complex interplay of the food environment, its impact on health (including dual burden of malnutrition) and the environmental sustainability of diets.

Biography

Daniel Mensah is currently the Project Manager and Research Fellow on the Elevate study aimed at mapping and evaluating innovative urgent and emergency care services in rural and coastal areas in England. The Elevate study is co-led by the Universities of Birmingham and York. By coordinating mixed-methods fieldwork, stakeholder engagement, and policy translation, Daniel aims to ensure the project generates actionable evidence to improve service resilience and equity.

Prior to this, Daniel held the Food and You 2 Statistics Fellowship, a partnership between the University of Warwick and the UK Food Standards Agency. In this role, he played key roles in the production of the FSA’s Official Statistic survey, a nationally representative data on food-related knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours, supporting evidence-informed food policy and the FSA’s communication to the public. Previously, he worked on an NIHR-funded project as a Research Fellow in Evidence Synthesis, exploring healthcare professionals’ experiences of using artificial intelligence in clinical practice. He also held an Early Career Fellowship at Warwick’s Institute of Advanced Study (IAS). As a Researcher at the Warwick Medical School, he co-developed the ConnectEat/ InterDine app, a digital intervention aimed at reducing loneliness and promoting mental wellbeing among university students as part of the EATEx study. He also worked on the FUEL study at the University of Birmingham, evaluating of the national School Food Standards and related national policy in secondary schools in the West Midlands area, and on a choice architecture intervention project aimed at promoting healthy eating in West Midlands schools at the University of Warwick.
