With a background in policy and research related to immigrant inclusion and exclusion, Tamlyn Monson’s interests lie in the political geography of inclusion and exclusion and in dynamics of mobility, space and power. She is interested in how power and policies shape where and how people are included or excluded in social, economic, and civic life, and how this plays out unevenly across different places.

At the University of Birmingham, Tamlyn is working within the Intellectual Disabilities Research Institute (IDRIS), contributing to a project that seeks to understand what improves community engagement and participation among adults with learning disabilities from a realist perspective (Getting better community engagement and participation of adults with learning disabilities: Realist synthesis, evaluation and co-production (CONNECT)).

She has previously worked at Coventry University’s Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government, UCL’s Development Planning Unit, the African Centre for Migration and Society at the university of the Witwatersrand, and the South African Human Rights Commission.
