Her research interests and expertise focus on the reciprocal relationship between financial hardship and mental health, with a particular focus on young adults’ mental health and youth employment transitions.
Mhairi’s PhD explores the relationship between financial difficulty, mental health and social policies during the COVID-19 pandemic, with a particular focus on young adults. She uses longitudinal data from Understanding Society to construct a multidimensional measure of financial difficulty and use it to better understand how income-support policies and financial hardship impact on youth mental health.
Before joining CHASM, Mhairi worked as a Teaching Assistant at Glasgow Caledonian University, and completed an internship at the Scottish Government, assisting on an evaluation of the Five Family Payments.
