Professor Ring's research interests are wide-ranging, encompassing interoception, skill acquisition, performance under pressure, and the interaction between mental and physical fatigue. He has published over 200 research publications with many papers on sport, exercise and cognitive performance. He has a H-index of over 80 and more than 17,000 citations. He has more than 30 PhD completions. To address the problem of mental fatigue impairing performance, he has pioneered combined cognitive and exercise interventions, such as Brain Endurance Training (BET) and combined exercise plus cognitive priming. These cognitive-exercise protocols have proved to be effective performance enhancers for healthy young athletes and sedentary older adults and patients.

Biography

Christopher studied psychology at the University of Hull, graduating with a first class degree in 1987. He then studied psychology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook under the supervision of Jasper Brener, completing his doctorate in cardiac psychophysics in 1993. This was followed by a post-doctoral fellowship in respiratory psychophysiology at Ohio University. In 1995, he joined the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Birmingham.

His current research projects examine the performance-enhancing benefits of combined cognitive-physical priming and Brain Endurance Training, investigate the psychometrics of an app-based cognitive battery for sport-related concussion, and explore the source of heartbeat sensations and the interoception-emotion-behaviour relationship.
