Health Improvement

Year 2 Semester 1

Credits 20

Health improvement is one of the three core domains of specialist public health practice (along with health protection and healthcare public health). It is defined as the process of enabling people to increase control over their health and its determinants, and thereby improve their health. It is central to the work of public health practitioners. This module will enable you to critically analyse health improvement policy, research, methods and strategies.

The module will consider the scope of health improvement and promotion; health promotion theories, models and strategies; changing behaviour; patient and public participation in health improvement; collaboration, partnerships, joint working and community development; ethics, ideology, power and politics relevant to health improvement; and the commissioning, planning and evaluation of health improvement and health promotion.
