The Build Higher Framework uses its own Social Value Charter to assess companies against our Build Higher Framework Standards. This aims to maximise efficiencies, sustainability, social value and environmental enhancements in its projects, aligning with the values laid out in our Strategic Framework.
At the tender stage, potential members of our Build Higher Framework were asked to include a narrative on how they address social value within their organisations. This assessed their Social, Economic, and Environmental Impacts as an organisation and was a key factor in their overall bid. Using this information, we have worked with our successful bidders to develop a bespoke suite of performance requirements which have been mutually agreed with them as our partners. These strict performance requirements, set out in the Social Value Charter, ensure the University of Birmingham works with contractors, designers and consultants that align with our own values in line with our Strategic Framework.
Examples of Criteria in the Social Value Charter:
- Hosting Apprentices, providing undergraduate placements and work experience opportunities.
- Supporting National Vocational Qualifications
- Donating Charitable hours
- Having plans in place including Diversity & Inclusion and Occupational health & wellbeing
- Supply chain uses local businesses and SMEs where possible
- Contributes to Community investment projects
- Having plans in place including carbon management, biodiversity, air quality and water reduction
- Diverting a significant proportion of waste from landfill
