The University has purchased 9.9 acres of land at the Battery Park site in Selly Oak and has partnered with experienced investor-developers Bruntwood SciTech to develop and construct a new Health Innovation Campus. The Birmingham Health Innovation Campus will establish the Midlands as the sector’s leading light in Life Sciences research and development.
An investment from the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) has allowed work to begin to turn the University’s pioneering plans of creating a pivotal life sciences facility into a reality. Working in partnership with local hospitals, the council and industry we will harness our research strengths to develop better treatment and patient care.
The uniquely located site will utilise the unrivalled healthcare infrastructure of Birmingham Health Partners (University of Birmingham, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, and Birmingham Women’s and Children's NHS Foundation Trust), the Institute of Translational Medicine (ITM) and the BioHub Birmingham, among many other centres of research and practice excellence all within close proximity to the Campus. Birmingham has one of the largest clinical trials bases in Europe with excellent clinical research facilities and access to an ethnically diverse, non-transient, regional population of over five million, the perfect landscape for delivering clinical trials. The West Midlands Genomic Medicine Centre is helping drive the 100,000 genomes project supporting the emerging precision medicine national strategy, and using our renowned expertise in informatics to link genetic and clinical information to improve patient care. Through the Campus we will deliver the full circle of translational medicine, from drug development to real world studies, to promote healthy living through maintaining quality of life and developing new treatments for disease. We are already tackling cancer, chronic and rare diseases, dementia, trauma and antibiotic resistance.
The Birmingham Health Innovation Campus will align with the broader life sciences expertise and infrastructure across the West Midlands and help establish Birmingham as a leading economic hub for life sciences. There are already 22,000 people employed in the sector across the region and more than 600 companies working in this area. The development of the site will afford industry greater access to leading research and facilities, investment prospects and the opportunity to develop their own facility spaces. This will give our local enterprises the edge in a competitive sector and promote job creation. Our vision is to attract the establishment of new SMEs and investment from large pharma and biotechnology firms. This will further enhance the region’s status as an internationally recognised hub for clinical academia.
Constructing our site on the former Battery Park in Selly Oak, we will also help breathe new life into the local area. Our life sciences facility will stand at the new heart of Selly Oak which will include fantastic leisure and retail facilities, student accommodation and new highway routes. Once the site is complete, Selly Oak will be transformed into a vibrant and bustling centre renowned for leisure and academic excellence.
