Global Strategic Partnership - Siemens

The University of Birmingham has appointed Siemens as a global, strategic partner in a bid to become the world’s Smartest Campus, supporting the first phase of the University’s transition to net zero carbon.

Birmingham & Siemens: Creating the smartest university campus in the world (Video transcript)

Siemens will show how both the Edgbaston and Dubai campuses can be transformed into the world’s most advanced ‘Smart Campus’, creating a Living Lab where research, teaching and learning all benefit from access to a range of digital technologies.

At the same time, Siemens is working with the University to develop a roadmap towards carbon neutrality, using specialist technology to create a digital twin of the campus energy system to identify the optimal pathway to net zero.

The idea of the University of Birmingham ‘living lab’ is to capture data from the University’s building technologies, estates infrastructure and energy plants and utilise it for research and development activities, as well as teaching and learning. Monitoring energy demand in real time with live data from across the site provides a unique opportunity for applied learning for students and creating a platform for cutting-edge research.

The holistic approach will allow the University and its partners to test energy innovations and low-carbon solutions at a large scale and optimise energy generation and usage across the campus.
