Professor M. Bayani Cardenas

We are pleased to host the only UK appearance of the 2025 Birdsall-Dreiss Distinguished Lecture Series, presented by the Geological Society of America (GSA). This internationally renowned series showcases leading voices in hydrogeology, and this year we are honoured to welcome Professor M. Bayani Cardenas from the University of Texas at Austin.

Professor Cardenas, the J. Nalle Gregory Regents Professor of Geological Sciences at the Jackson School of Geosciences, has been named both the 2025 Birdsall-Dreiss Distinguished Lecturer and the LaMoreaux International Distinguished Lecturer—a rare dual recognition of his groundbreaking contributions to the field.

His research spans diverse environments—from Arctic permafrost to tropical coral reefs—exploring how water moves through and transforms natural systems. In this special lecture, Professor Cardenas will present:

"How a River's Periodic Pulse Affects its Liver: Hyporheic Zones in the Anthropocene"

This compelling talk will explore hyporheic zones—the dynamic interfaces where groundwater and surface water meet—and their vital role in sustaining river ecosystems. As pressures from climate change and human activity intensify, understanding these hidden zones has never been more critical.

This event offers a unique opportunity for students, researchers, and professionals in hydrology, environmental science, and related fields to engage with Professor Cardenas's insights on the dynamic interactions between hydrologic processes and ecological systems. We warmly invite you to join us for what promises to be an inspiring and insightful session.
