We send congratulations to the new King and Queen Consort on the special occasion of their Coronation, a time for celebration and one of significant national interest. The University of Birmingham was founded in 1900 by Royal Charter, from Queen Victoria, and we felt incredibly privileged to continue this relationship with Queen Elizabeth II. We look forward to welcoming His Majesty King Charles III to campus throughout his reign, in his role as University Visitor.
A message from the Vice-Chancellor

For many of us, the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III will be the first time we have seen a new monarch take the throne; a moment of national significance and interest. I’d like to extend my congratulations and very best wishes to the new King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort.

The King at the University of Birmingham
The University has enjoyed a close association with His Majesty and we are proud to have hosted His Majesty King Charles III recently on our campus.
- In 2018, King Charles was taken on a guided tour around the University's Institute of Forest Research (BIFoR). During his visit, the King unveiled a plaque made of planed oak and also spoke with scientists and researchers involved with the project. As a memento of his visit, he was presented with an engraved bottle, found in the forest during the site's construction, which had been filled with air from the forest at its predicted CO2 level in 2050.
- In 2022, ahead of the opening ceremony for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, King Charles met with athletes and representatives from various nations when he visited the Principal Athletes’ Village at the University of Birmingham. The King spent time chatting and joking with competitors, who turned out in their hundreds to greet him.
