A new centre for student services in the heart of the historic Edgbaston campus of the University of Birmingham is to be created, as part of a £175million campus development project.

The new student services hub is the next phase of the estates development project to begin, and will see the interior of an entire block of the Grade II listed Aston Webb building remodelled to house a number of student-facing teams which are currently scattered across the campus.

This will include facilities for the Careers Network, Student Services and Registry, as well as a reception, information zone and a suite of one-to-one consultation rooms. The Hub will also include mixed social and learning spaces and a 250-seat lecture theatre.

The Hub will sit on a new pedestrian route which runs down to the new sports centre, being constructed on the corner of Bristol Road and Edgbaston Park Road.

Construction group Interserve have been appointed to carry out the work which will begin in March and is anticipated to be finished in June 2015.

Dr Chris Twine, director of student services at the University of Birmingham said: “We are delighted that work is about to get underway on turning this part of our historic campus into a valuable 21st century resource for students.

“When complete, it will mean students will be able to access to modern support facilities for a wide range of services and enquiries, staffed by colleagues dedicated to promoting student success, in a stunning space renovated to meet the present and future needs of the University community.”

University of Birmingham Campus redevelopment

The new student hub is part of a £175m five-year redevelopment scheme for the University of Birmingham’s historic Edgbaston campus to benefit students, staff and visitors.

These exciting campus developments, which have been approved by Birmingham City Council, underpin the University’s strategic aims to become a leading global university and, in turn, support the city’s ambitions for the future
