Key charitable information

The University of Birmingham is a corporate body created by Royal Charter in 1900 and an exempt charity under Schedule 3 of the Charities Act 2011. This status means that the University is not required to register directly with the Charity Commission, and in turn is not subject to its direct supervision. However, following the Charities Act 2006, from 1 April 2018 the Office for Students became ‘principal regulator’ of the vast majority of Higher Education Institutions in England, including the University of Birmingham.

Please note that the University of Birmingham has trade marked its name and also the name Birmingham University.

The overall objective of the University, stated in its Charter (PDF - 98KB), is that it will be “both a teaching and an examining University and shall further the prosecution of original research”.
