Book to the Future, the University of Birmingham’s festival of the written and spoken word, is back for its third year.
The festival takes place across the Edgbaston campus from October 15–17 and celebrates the creative talent of the University’s students, staff and alumni. A packed programme of free events includes lectures, workshops and performances celebrating the written and spoken word.
Among the festival highlights are:
Unravelling the story behind the Birmingham Qur’an
Josefine Frank, curator of the ongoing Birmingham Qur’an manuscript exhibition, tells the story behind the seventh-century manuscript that became a global sensation.
Phenomenal Women
An evening of performance poetry featuring a host of the region’s top female poets.
Making a Living from Writing: Narinder Dhami
Narinder Dhami, Birmingham alumna and author best known for books including Bend it Like Beckham, gives her top tips on how to earn a living from writing.
Book to the Future Presents: SJ Watson
Award-winning author and alumnus SJ Watson returns to campus to discuss the phenomenal international success of his first novel Before I Go to Sleep with BBC Radio 4 Woman’s Hour presenter and fellow alumna Jane Garvey.
Noël Coward and Transatlantic style
Birmingham alumna Faye Hammill discusses ocean travel and transatlantic exchange in Noël Coward’s stage and literary career, followed by a special exhibition viewing and drinks reception.
