Operations Management Masters/ MSc postgraduate degree

This degree is aimed at holders of at least an upper second-class Honours degree in engineering or similar interested in studying the management and control of operations from a technical standpoint. You might be just finishing your first degree, or perhaps already in your first role and looking to advance your career.

You will learn to how to analyse various systems, practices and procedures employed in the management of operations, design such systems from new, evaluate and report on their effectiveness and appropriateness and assess real organisations from a practical operations management perspective.

On completion, you will be skilled to work in positions in factory, logistics or general management within the industrial, commercial or service sectors.

September 2016 will see a major change to our MSc programme in Operations Management. The structure of the year (two semesters of taught modules delivered in week “blocks” followed by a major project in the summer) will remain as currently advertised but there will be a distinctive difference in the division of taught modules between the two semesters. Learn more about the changes on the course details tab.

We offer three modular programmes intended for those aspiring towards senior positions in:

  • Project Management (PM)
  • Operations Management (OM)
  • Engineering Management (EM)

We concentrate upon not only analytical subjects but also communication skills and teamwork. Semester 1 modules are taken by all students to develop a firm base of general knowledge and techniques for further specialised management study. Semester 2 sees students split into relevant modules for each programme; these modules are designed to provide students with a rounded view of management in the engineering and industrial sectors. The programme culminates in a 15 week dissertation project encompassing real industry or commercial study, which will be undertaken in the summer (in year 2 for part-time students).

Examples of project titles:

  • BP in the Global Oil Industry
  • Human Resources Management at Royal Bank of Scotland
  • Analysis of the Hellenic Steel Industry
  • Strategic Repositioning of the BMW Group

New for 2016

In semester 1 key management concepts will be taught by leading academics from Birmingham Business School, including topics such as strategy, innovation, marketing, organisational behaviour and financial management.

In semester 2 these key management concepts will be complemented by the exploration of practical management applications in the field of Operations Management by academics from the School of Engineering, drawing upon its wealth of research experience and industrial links.

This new structure will allow us to present the core principles in semester 1 and then to demonstrate their application in semester 2 before you progress into the summer and the opportunity to investigate and develop a contemporary Operations Management topic via a 60 credit research project.

You can expect to be exposed throughout to up-to-date knowledge of current and future trends in the management of your chosen field whilst developing the skills of critical evaluation and analysis that you will need as an Engineer of tomorrow. We look forward to welcoming you.

Delivery of the taught modules is "block teaching" whereby 10 credit modules are delivered in one-week blocks and 20 credit modules over two weeks, allowing students to focus on and gain an in-depth knowledge of each subject and enabling each programme to be taken full-time (1 year) or part-time (2 years) as preferred. Rather than just teaching students by lectures, we help them to learn through a combination of guided study, investigations, projects and research, i.e. "enquiry-based learning".

Please note that our programmes may change as we review our MSc provision. Before making an application, contact the School directly for the most up-to-date information.

Our programmes are highly demanding and attract high flying graduates who want to go into careers in senior management and consulting.
