Award Description

The University of Birmingham is delighted to be one of the UK institutions selected to participate in the Science without Borders (Ciência sem Fronteiras) scheme.

What is Science without Borders?

The Brazilian government is providing funding for Brazilian PhD students working in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and creative industry subjects to undertake an entire PhD, or one year of their PhD, in the UK. Science without Borders is managed by two Brazilian higher education agencies: CAPES and CNPq.

Digital Humanities is one of the subjects that Science without Borders students can study at doctoral level at Birmingham, and we welcome applications at any time of year.

To find out more about studying for a PhD at the University of Birmingham, including full details of the research undertaken in each school, the funding opportunities for each subject, and guidance on making your application, you can order a copy of our Doctoral Research Prospectus.

Value of Award

CsF will pay up to £20,000 towards tuition and bench fees for each Ciência sem Fronteiras PhD student per year of their study in the UK. For full PhD students, funding can be awarded for up to 4 years. This funding goes towards financing:

  • Tuition fees
  • Administrative and student support within the host UK university
  • Research/bench fees (if applicable)

In addition to this funding, CsF provides students with a monthly stipend to cover living costs (including accommodation), a return airfare from Brazil, a relocation allowance and also health insurance for the duration of their studies. These benefits are paid directly to the student.

Eligibility Criteria

Science without Borders scholarships are only open to Brazilian students.

Students should hold a Masters degree or equivalent. Students must also meet English language requirements: IELTS 6.0 (no less than 6.0 in any band) or TOEFL 93 (no less than 22 in Reading, 21 in Listening, 23 in Speaking, 21 in Writing).

How to Apply

Students must apply through Universities UK. Please visit the website

Students can contact SwB UK or Universities at any time throughout the year, to enquire about applying for a PhD.  However they need to bear in mind that the Brazilian funding agencies operate 3 calls per year. The full calendar of calls can be found on the website.

There is flexibility in terms of the exact course start date which would need to be agreed by the student, the Brazilian funding agencies and the UK University.

For more information on how to apply, visit their website. The Universities UK website also contains details of what is included in the funding package and many other very useful details.

Please contact our Study Abroad and Exchanges team by email  or our representative in Brazil, Patricia Borsa.
