EchA6 crystals

TB researchers in the School of Biosciences at the University of Birmingham identify a new fatty acid shuttle mechanism in Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causative agent of tuberculosis, as a new drug target in collaboration with GlaxoSmithKline.

The research from Biosciences staff, including Professor Gurdyal Besra, Dr Apoorva Bhatt, Dr Klaus FüttererDr Jonathan Cox and Dr Katherine Abrahams, was recently published online on the Nature Microbiology website.

Professor Besra said, "We have solved the X-ray crystal structure of EchA6 showing attachment of a new TB drug. This is exciting as it has uncovered a new pathway in TB and a potential new drug target."
