The University of Birmingham has been recognised for its excellence in the arts and humanities.
The Times Higher Education league table provides a useful comparison between institutions for prospective students. The methodology employed evaluated 13 separate performance indicators designed to capture the full range of university activities, from teaching to research to knowledge transfer.
The subject rankings published this month, show that Birmingham has been positioned as the 43rd best University in the world for arts and humanities education, and has been placed amongst the top 10 Universities in the UK.
Professor Heather Widdows, Deputy Director for the College of Arts and Law Graduate School said, 'Too often sciences overshadow arts and humanities subject areas in terms of media coverage. However, arts subjects are not only essential to the globalised economy, but they are the engine of human interaction and at the heart of human enrichment: they shape how we think about our world. They include long-established fields such as philosophy, history and english in addition to fields which are important to cultural and economic aspects of our society, such as music and languages.
It is an overarching goal of the University to be placed in the top 50 in the global rankings for Higher Education. Strength in the arts and humanities is absolutely necessity if we are to achieve this. This recent ranking shows that the College of Arts and Law is indeed attaining excellence and its achievements in these areas are being recognised. It is great to see our hard work is paying off.'
