Doctoral research funding opportunities

Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC) scholarships

The 2013 AHRC scholarships scheme is now closed. The deadline for applications was Monday 28 January 2013.

We were able to offer 13 AHRC doctoral studentships for students undertaking research in the following areas: Classics and Ancient History; English Language and Literature; German Language and Culture; History; History of Art, Architecture and Design; Italian Language and Culture; Music; Philosophy; Religious Studies.

Details of scholarships for 2014 will be available later in the year.

Elite Doctoral Researcher scholarships  

The University of Birmingham Graduate School Doctoral Elite Scholarships competition for 2013 is now closed for further nominations; the deadline for nominations was Monday 14 January 2013.

The scholarships cover full overseas tuition fees, an annual maintenance grant and generous research support allowances.

Details of scholarships for 2014 will be available later in the year.

College scholarships 

The College of Arts and Law doctoral scholarships scheme for 2013 is now closed. The deadline for applications was Monday 28 January 2013.

We were able to offer a number of fees and maintenance scholarships to both home/EU and overseas students studying in any School in the College.

Distance learning PhD bursaries

The College of Arts and Law is pleased to announce four Distance Learning bursaries for doctoral students for 2013-14. Each bursary will be a fee contribution of £2,000. These are one-off awards; however, students can apply each year. These awards are available to both home/EU and overseas students studying in all Schools in the College: 

  • Archaeology and Antiquity
  • English, Drama, American and Canadian Studies
  • History and Cultures 
  • Languages, Cultures, Art History and Music
  • Law
  • Philosophy, Theology and Religion

The deadline for receipt of funding applications and references for the distance learning bursaries is 16:00, Thursday 25 April 2013.

Notes 

  • Your application must be supported by two references. It is the responsibility of the applicant to forward the reference form to both nominated referees and advise them that references must be returned to calpg-research@contacts.bham.ac.uk by 16:00 on Thursday 25 April 2013.  Further notes on submitting references are available on the scholarship application form. 
  • Applications for funding will not be considered without an application to study
  • Part-time applicants are also eligible for the bursary; the award would be split over two years, with a contribution of £1,000 towards fees for 2013/14 and 2014/15

Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) scholarships 

The ESRC scholarships scheme for 2013 is now closed. The deadline for nominations in the College of Arts and Law was Monday 28 January 2013. 

Scholarships were available in the following Arts and Law subject areas: Applied Linguistics; Economic and Social History; European Studies; Russian and East European Studies; Socio-Legal Studies; West African Studies.

Details of scholarships available for 2014 will be available later in the year.

Ironbridge Institute: John Pagett Bursary  

Thanks to a generous bequest from John Pagett, a man intensely interested in the natural history and archaeology of Shropshire and the West Midlands, we are able to offer an annual award of £3,000 to part-fund postgraduate research in this area at the University of Birmingham. 

To apply for the award, you must:

  • Intend to carry out historical, archaeological or natural history research on Shropshire or the immediate region
  • Register (or be registered) for a postgraduate research degree at the University of Birmingham

The fund is administered by the Trustees of the Pagett Fund, to whom applicants must apply in writing.

Law School scholarships

Modern Greek studies studentships

Thanks to a generous grant from the A.G.Leventis Foundation, three postgraduate studentships are available for students who wish to pursue a full-time higher degree programme (MRes, MA by Research or PhD) in the fields of Modern Greek (including Cypriot) literature, language, history and culture. Prospective candidates may contact Professor Dimitris Tziovas at d.p.tziovas@bham.ac.uk for advice on research topics for which supervision is available.

The studentships will cover University fees for one year only (at the rate applicable to UK and EU students) and may be applied for annually subject to a satisfactory progress report. Subsistence costs will not be covered.

Notes

  • Supporting documents: New students will be asked to provide a detailed research proposal, two references and a transcript of qualifications. Current students will be asked to provide a detailed outline of their research thesis, a 1,000 word progress report on their research to date and a supporting statement from their supervisor. Further notes on this are available on the scholarship application form.
  • Eligibility: Applications for funding will not be considered without an application to study; you are encouraged to submit your application to study as soon as possible. Candidates should have a first class or upper second class degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject. To apply for the PhD, candidates should also have completed, or be completing, a Masters degree in a relevant subject.
