Great Balls of Pyrophosphate

Laura Driscoll
PhD student in the groups of Professor Peter Slater and Dr Adrian Wright

In recent years, the Wright group has focused on new synthetic routes to materials that have applications including as biomaterials and pigments. This image is of a phosphate material and such materials can display a wide range of structures for the applications mentioned above. This zirconium pyrophosphate, ZrP2O7, when doped with vanadium forms with this unusual but eye catching uniform spherical morphology and we are currently investigating why this occurs and the implications for other materials synthesized using our methods.
