Our research tackles the problems faced by society today and develops the knowledge and tools to build the communities of the future. Many of our projects have already had a significant impact on society; the impact of others will be felt by generations to come.
Research within the School is clustered into two themes – Railways; and Resilience and Sustainability. Our research benefits from being funded by industry, charities and research councils, which encourages innovative thinking and creates internationally recognised work. We are always keen to discuss research opportunities with individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds. Visit the Civil Engineering PhD/MPhil course page for further information.
Changes to postgraduate awards
Please note that from 2012/13, the University of Birmingham will no longer offer the award of one year MPhil(A) or MPhil(B). Instead these will be replaced by the award of MA/MSc by Research or MRes. For further details, please contact the admissions tutor.
