Dr Tom Lockwood has been awarded a Research Grant from the British Academy, for his project ‘A Romantic Renaissance: Charles Lamb at the Folger Shakespeare Library’.

Dr Lockwood’s current research focuses on Charles Lamb (1775-1834), an English writer and essayist, and contemporary of Wordsworth and Coleridge. In particular, he is interested in how Lamb read Renaissance texts, like those of Shakespeare, in the Romantic age.

This award enabled Dr Lockwood to travel to the Folger Shakespeare Library, Washington DC, to spend a week studying its unique and internally significant collection of manuscripts and rare books; the library houses the world’s largest collection of printed works by Shakespeare. The research undertaken for this award, which took place in October and November 2015, will contribute towards a new complete edition of The Works of Charles and Mary Lamb, to be published by Oxford University Press.
