Initial Teacher Training
The Initial Teacher Education Courses, recently rated as 'outstanding' by OFSTED, are extremely well regarded at local and national level. They do not only offer teacher training in Primary or Secondary Education but also offer the equivalent of 120 credits at master’s level, making them the first of their kind in the country. All these programmes lead to Qualified teacher Status (QTS) and are offered in partnership with local schools. They combine all the practical advantages of school-based work with the experience and expertise of a team of University staff who specialise in initial teacher training. On satisfactory completion of their teacher training course and a successful induction year in school, student teachers may return to complete a 60-credit dissertation part-time and gain an MA in Teaching Studies.
Currently the PGDipEd is available in the following subjects:
School Direct is available within the School of Education, University of Birmingham through partnerships with both primary and secondary schools. There are two routes currently being offered:
- School Direct Training programme
- School Direct Training Programme (salaried)
Both routes offer the PGCE for Primary Subjects and the PGDipEd for Secondary subjects alongside Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) for those who train to be a teacher via this route.
Education for Health Professionals
Education for Health Professionals is a series of three year-long part-time post-graduate programmes (PG Cert/PG Dip/MEd) for health professionals involved in the education and training of undergraduates and postgraduates.
School Improvement and Educational Leadership
The School Improvement and Educational Leadership programme is designed to make a difference in schools through leadership that is focused on learning. The knowledge and experience you will gain from this programme will place you in an ideal position to inform the future improvement and make a difference to the overall performance of your school. It will help provide you with the foundations to become a leader in school improvement using evidence-based analysis and by challenging current practices.
Doctoral research training
There are two taught doctoral programmes within the school which comprise of taught modules and a research thesis as well as the cross college Integrated Study (Social Sciences) PhD. Alternatively you can undertake a research degree by thesis. All offer part-time study as an option.

The University School
The University school and Sixth Form is located near to the university. It is one of the first "University Training Schools" in the country offering a unique enhancement to activity within the School of Education.
