Professor Rob MacKenzie was interviewed by The Weather Network TV channel (Canada) about his work on aircraft contrails in World War Two, which has just been published in the International Journal of Climatology (Ryan et al., 2011). The study used the “inadvertent experiment” of mass formation bombing by the USAAF during WW2 to study the impact of aircraft contrail formation on high cloud amount over South East England and, hence, the surface energy balance there. The interview was broadcast online and on TV for Armistice Day and included reflections on the terrible loss of life on both sides caused by the bombing.
