We are pleased to launch the first postgraduate journal of the Ironbridge Institute.

furnace, is a newly forged Postgraduate within the Ironbridge International Institute of Cultural Heritage (IIICH), University of Birmingham. Cultural heritage is an ever expanding and diversifying discipline; we hope to be a facilitator for sparking debates and discussions surrounding the field.

The theme for the first edition of the journal is: ‘cultural heritage in an international age’. What significant roles can heritage play in a globalising and modernising world? Has the scope and scale of the discipline responded to the demands of today’s international community? Is heritage in a dialogue with reality? These questions begin to deconstruct some of the present issues surrounding the theme and make fundamental enquiries about the future of cultural heritage.

To view the free journal online and download individual articles go to:

Articles include:

  • An exclusive keynote paper by Dr John Carman- Internationalising heritage: the problem with being both Global and Local.
  • Critical heritage usages: a case of Thailand.
  • Interpretation in cultural tourism: Nubian culture in Southern Egypt.
  • The role of cultural heritage in economic regeneration: the case if Shanghai and Hangzhou.
  • Glocalising Conservation

The call for papers for our second edition is now out on the theme: Cultural Heritage in a digital age.
