Earlier this month, Birmingham Law School senior lecturer Dr Djakhongir Saidov took part in the Villanova Law Review Norman J. Shachoy Symposium on ‘Assessing the CISG and Other International Endeavors to Unify International Contract Law’.
The symposium took place on18 January 2013 in the School of Law, Villanova University, United States. Its focus was on whether the United Nations should undertake the drafting of a new convention on the international sale of goods.
Dr Saidov presented a paper on ‘Conformity of Goods: A Critical Look at Article 35 of the CISG’. The paper assessed some aspects of the Convention’s experience gained as a consequence of the application of its provisions on conformity of the goods. This assessment identified the Convention’s emerging strengths and the areas which have given rise to controversy. In the light of the question of whether time was ripe for a new international sales law instrument, the paper reflected on whether there was room for improving or reforming the Convention’s experience arising from the application of its Article 35.
Dr Saidov also took part in the meetings of the CISG Advisory Council, which were held in conjunction with the symposium. Dr Saidov presented a draft report on the conformity of the goods to the Council.
