The Court of Appeal cited Birmingham Law lecturer Dr Stephen W. Smith’s recent monograph, End-of-Life Decisions in Medical Care this month.

The Court of Appeal is the mid-level appellate court in England and Wales. The case was Aintree University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust v James & Ors [2013] EWCA Civ 65 (01 March 2013) .

Cambridge University Press published Dr Smith’s book last February as part of their Bioethics and the Law series. It examines the legal and ethical issues that arise at the end of life and identifies ways to regulate decisions and minimise abuses based on ethical principles.

Dr Stephen W. Smith teaches Bioethics at the University of Birmingham, UK. He specialises in medico-ethical issues at the end of life and has given papers at seminars and international conferences in Sydney, Charlottesville, Virginia, Manchester, Toronto, London and Birmingham.
