Over 300 first year students at Birmingham Law School have participated in a competition to draft a preamble to a modern UK constitution that is being run by the House of Commons Political and Constitutional Reform Committee.

The students were initially required to draft their own preamble before then convening in groups of around 8 to 10 students to agree a text between them. As a result students (with very varied views, experiences and backgrounds) were required to negotiate the content of the preamble and thus acquired insight into some of the challenges that would arise if the UK was to seek to codify its historic constitution.
