It’s been another fantastic year for our Centre for Professional Legal Education and Research (CEPLER) – thanks in huge part to our alumni and friends. CEPLER aims to extend the opportunities available to our students and improve their employability, distinguishing them from graduates from other Law Schools and helping them to become future lawyers and leaders.

It’s been another fantastic year for our Centre for Professional Legal Education and Research (CEPLER) – thanks in huge part to our alumni and friends.

This March we hosted our inaugural Annual Awards Reception –celebrating another successful year and the outstanding achievements of individual students in extra-curricular activities.

Sponsored by the University of Law and Birmingham Law School, the evening featured inspirational speeches from two of Birmingham’s esteemed alumni: Kolarele Sonaike, barrister, mediator, and President of the community-based charity 100 Black Men of London; and Annabell Lamba, who works in Higher Education marketing and returned to the University of Birmingham for a role in Postgraduate Marketing after graduating with a Law and Business Studies degree in 2011.

Some of you may have fond memories of mooting during your time at Birmingham, and to this day mooting remains central to our calendar.

First year students compete in the Alumni Cup, and are judged mostly by our fantastic alumni volunteers. This year’s winner was Gerard Lee Hann-En. He said, “Mooting has allowed me to see a side of the law away from textbooks. The mental and oratory skills gained from the entire competition, along with the people I have met on the way made the entire event enjoyable, memorable and worth all the effort spent preparing for it.”

The Camm Cup is comprised of third and second year comptitors, and this year’s overall winner was William Bebb. This year’s Holdsworth President, Lord Hughes of Ombersley, chaired the Camm Cup judging panel, and we invited to stage the final in the Royal Courts of Justice in London. William said, “Getting involved with mooting was the best decision I made throughout my University experience. My advocacy skills and my general confidence have grown immeasurably as a result.”

LLM and LLB for Graduate students participate in the Postgraduate Cup and this year’s winner was Jonathan Deal, who said “Participating in the Postgraduate Cup was a rewarding and fulfilling experience. The feedback I received has helped me identify my strengths and weaknesses going forward. I would openly recommend Mooting to others in the future.

Both the Camm and Postgraduate Cups are sponsored by No5 Chambers. These competitions are judged mainly by barristers from No5 and CEPLER is grateful to them for their support.

CEPLER would like to thank all of our alumni who took the time to contribute to another fantastic year encouraging the professional development of our students.
